First groom near Westmere.

A slow, gentle introduction to the studio for puppies, kittens and nervous pets.

For pets from Westmere.

A gentle first groom for new family puppies.

A first groom is about trust more than finish. It’s a shorter visit, with plenty of pauses, where your pet meets us, stands on the table, hears the dryer and gets used to being gently handled.

For puppies and kittens, an early, calm start makes every future groom easier. For older pets who have had a difficult experience, we go even slower and let them lead.

You’re welcome to pop in first for a quiet hello with no groom at all, just a sniff around the studio and a treat.

The visit

How a first groom unfolds.

  1. A quiet hello

Time to sniff the studio and meet us.

  2. On the table

A soft mat, a steady hand and a treat.

  3. A little water

A short, warm bath if they’re comfortable.

  4. The dryer

On low, from a distance first.

  5. Home on a good note

We always stop while it’s going well.

Coats we often see for this groom.

  • Curly coats

    Poodles, doodles, bichons

A bath, a full blow-dry to straighten the curl and a scissor or clipper finish to the length you’d like.

  • Smooth coats

    Beagles, Labradors, boxers

A good bath, a rubber-brush de-shed, nails and ears. Quick, clean and fresh.

  • Long-haired cat coats

    Persians, Maine Coons, ragdolls

A calm brush-out and de-mat at their pace. A bath only if it suits them, agreed with you first.

  • Double coats

    Huskies, retrievers, shepherds

A deep wash and a thorough de-shed with a high-velocity dryer. We never shave a double coat unless your vet advises it.

Practise a little at home.

Gently touch their paws, ears and face each day, with a treat after. Let them hear a hairdryer on low from across the room. Short, calm moments build confidence before they ever reach the studio.

Tell us about anything that worries them, such as loud noises, being lifted or having their feet touched. We’ll plan the first groom around it.

Bring along

  • Their favourite treats
  • Their lead and harness, or a carrier
  • Notes on what worries them
  • A familiar blanket, if it helps
